Novus Systems
How it works

Novus two position activation system

NOVUS achieves superior performance over high priced units by using a two position activation system compared to the common single position approach. The map below shows a 500 yard radius around the fixed camera.

Some low and high end units use a simple zonal activation and advise a driver that they are approaching a camera by simply generating a warning whenever a vehicle crosses the boundary of a 500 yard circle centred on the cameras position, regardless of the vehicles direction. Tom Tom is a classic example of giving non directional warnings. It can be seen in the image below that the camera is surrounded by many roads within the red circle, because of this some units will generate a false alert using the single activation point approach.

NOVUS removes false alerts by using a two position activation approach, using an initial activation point and a camera location. With this approach NOVUS will only generate a warning when a vehicle passes an activation point and is driving towards a camera. Should a vehicle be travelling on a road near a camera, or even approach from the opposite direction, the vehicle will not pass the activation point in the correct direction and alarm will be raised.

How the NOVUS speed camera detectors warn you of a speed camera ahead

When you are approaching a fixed speed camera or a possible mobile speed camera site, the NOVUS products warn you approximately 500 yards before the speed camera. Our research has show that this is the preferred distance, giving ample advanced warning.

When you are 500 yards from the speed camera, a voice inside will say for example:

"Warning! Speed Camera 500 yards ahead, Limit 30 miles per hour."

When you are 200 yards away, the NOVUS products sense whether you are over speed for the approaching camera. If you are travelling at or below the speed limit, you will not be hassled with constant alerts before passing the camera or other hazard. The NOVUS products know exactly how fast you are travelling by the GPS satellite technology and the award winning database knows the speed limit of the road on which you are travelling.

If you are exceeding the speed limit in the last 200 yards before the speed trap, NOVUS products will say:

"Attention! Reduce Speed."

It keeps repeating this message until you reduce your speed to the speed limit or below.

The Road Specific Activation method combined with the direction sensitivity and speed sense capability set s us from our competitors.

About our devices

The Novus Alpha, Delta, Rider, Piccolo units can store around 150,000 positions on their database.

The Delta and Rider have an LED display on the front of the unit, which provides additional information to the voice announcements. The Alpha has an OLED screen that can display vast amounts of information for the user to see.

All Novus units are easy to install, fixing to the dashboard using a small rubberised magnet, with a peel off sticky base. Insert the power jack into the cigar lighter, it is now ready to use.

The Novus units are updated via our website. See Database Downloads

All our units can store around 150,000 positions in their database. These can be divided into different data sets, to distinguish between such positions as fixed speed cameras, possible mobile camera positions, red light cameras, schools, and accident black-spots. We can also sub divide some of these groups by speed limit, and allocate a voice alert. Thus we can alert the driver to a fixed or possible mobile camera site, and give him/her the speed limit at that site.

The Novus Delta and Rider have an LED display on the front of the unit, which provides additional information to the voice announcements. Whilst driving normally it will display the current speed. When a warning is triggered, a chime is heard followed by an announcement such as ‘Warning speed camera 500 yards ahead - limit 30 miles per hour', the speed limit at the camera site will flash for eight seconds, before going back to displaying the vehicle's speed. This will typically happen at 500 yards from the camera position, (in some cases a 500 yard warning is not ideal because of the road layout).
A second chime is heard at 200 yards from the camera site, and if the vehicle is still over the speed limit, a continuous warning is heard ‘Warning - reduce speed' until the vehicle speed drops to the speed limit, or the camera site is passed.

The Novus units are easy to install. In the box there is a small rubberised magnet, with a peel off sticky base. The user simply has to remove the sticker cover, and position the magnet on the top of their dashboard. Insert the power jack into the cigar lighter, and plug the other end of the lead into the unit, then place the unit on top of the magnet. It is now ready to use.

We at Novus have taken a revolutionary step with our database collection. We also warn you of all mobile safety camera van sites.

Other Speed Camera Detectors may rely on Laser and Radar detectors to warn drivers of mobile cameras operating. We have always considered this to be a very unreliable method of detection. In the case of Laser detectors, they will often alert the driver at exactly the moment their speeding offence is being recorded.
Due to the way in which the detector works, as soon as it picks up a laser beam, the speed camera operator has logged the speed, and the process for issuing a ticket has begun. Radar detectors are susceptible to false alarms, and are therefore set at a lower sensitivity than is really required. These types of detector can issue many false alarms, or fail to detect correctly.

What is GPS and How does it work?

Novus is our own brand name for the GPS enabled Speed Camera Detector.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and can be used to pinpoint a position anywhere on the Earth's surface.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation system consisting of a network of 28 orbiting satellites. A GPS speed camera detector will then lock onto at least three or more GPS satellites to indicate the exact location of your vehicle. Using a database of GPS co-ordinates of speed cameras and in many case speed limits which is up dateable. The GPS speed camera detector will then warn the driver from a pre-set range to the presence of speed cameras and other defined points such as accident black spot and congestion charging zones on the road ahead.
