FAQs
Q. Are Speed Camera Detectors Legal?
A. Yes Novus products are 100% legal to use and own.
Q. Do I need a Radar/Laser Detector as well?
A. No! The traditional method for detecting mobile cameras is to use radar/laser detectors. With Novus Speed Camera Dectectors the driver can be warned in advance of possible active mobile camera sites, whether there is a camera operating or not. This unique approach creates greater driver awareness and allows more time to adjust the speed of your vehicle if necessary,
Recent announcements in the Press have indicated that the Government intends to outlaw the use of Speed camera detection equipment that actively detect if a particular camera site is operational or not. Novus Speed Came Dectectors are an entirely passive system based purely upon the location of the vehicle to a known camera location, accident black spot etc. This approach is entirly acceptable within the current understanding of the Government proposal.
Q. How do the Novus Speed Camera Dectectors know where the cameras are?
A. The Speed Camera Data for the Novus Speed Camera Detectors is provided by GPS Location and Timing. The data provided by them is the best available. They constantly monitor the various agencies that decide on the positions of speed cameras.
Q. If the unit can tell me where the cameras are, can it also tell me the speed limit?
A. When the Novus Speed Camera Dectectors alerts you to a fixed speed camera position it will also inform you of the speed limit at the site. In the case of mobile sites, it will also inform you of the speed limit where possible. Some mobile sites have varying speed limits.
Q. How do I fit my Novus Speed Camera Dectector?
A. Simply stick the magnetic pad to the top of the dashboard and the Unit will sit on top of the magnet via its metallic base. Connect the power lead from the cigar socket to the unit and the system will instantly power up and is ready for use.
Q. Do the units work in all vehicles?
A. All the product willl work in vehicles with +12v or +24v power systems. We will not guarantee it will work in vehicles with metalised windscreens as used by Renault and some Peugeot and Citroen models.
Q. Do the units work behind metalised windscreens?
A. Metalised windscreen are used to reflect UV rays. This type of windscreen also blocks GPS signals entering the vehicle, but signal may vary so we can not guarantee a good signal lock.
Q. My unit seems to display a slower speed than what my car is showing, is the speed on the unit correct?
A. Yes. Our GPS products are accurate to 1 mph, so depending on the car you might see a 5-10% difference in speed.
Q. The GPS Rider on Sale in ALDI states that it contains the TALEX database. Can you please explain this?
A. The TALEX database had to be acknowledged as it was part of a licence agreement in place between Embedded Technology and GPS Location and Timing. Embedded Technology has gone into administration and GPS Location and Timing is allowed to use the core TALEX data "Without limitation or restriction" . GPS Location and Timing aims to build on this award winning database with its own survey and database monitoring team. We believe we are receiving the best available speed camera data.
Troubleshooting
Updating Novus Delta or Rider
Q. Everytime I go to update i am getting an error message No.14 & 16?
A.This is because the update programme is having problems making a connection with your device. This could be down to a number of reasons which are listed below:
- The USB driver is not installed properly.
Please unplug the USB cable from the computer , then click on this link to access the USB Driver, once re-installed please then restart your computer and try again.
- The unit is not switched to DL position.
- The unit is not switched to the ON position.
- The computer cannot find the unit please close the update programme down and disconnect the cable. Please then reapply the cable and open the update utility select a com port and update.
- If you are using a laptop you may not be getting enough power to the unit, so please ensure your laptop is plugged into the wall socket and if possible use a MAINS Powered USB Hub to ensure additional power is recieved.
- USB Hubs can cause problems as information can be lost through the hub. Also hubs sometimes do not apply enough power. If you are using one please make sure it is MAINS power or try disconnecting the USB cable and plug straight into the computer.
Q. I am only getting COM1 in the Com port box when updating?
A. Please close the update programme down and remove the USB Cable from the computer. Reapply the cable and then open the update, there should now be a new option in the Com port box.
If you are still getting the same information then we recommend unplugging the USB Cable and re-install the USB Driver. Once done restart the computer then plug the USB cable back in.
Q. I have lots of options in my COM Port list and I don't know which one it is?
A. First of all, just try clicking on the "Start Update" button to see if the program can find the COM port. If failing that then this is usually caused by Bluetooth or mobile phone software using a large amount of ports on the computer. Our software uses COM Ports between 1 and 16. COM's 1 and 2 and used by a serial cable, so you will be looking for a number higher than 2.
To find out which port you are using you will need to go to: Start>ControlPanel>System>Hardware>DeviceManger>Ports(COM and LPT).
In this list Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port(com?) should appear and the number in the brackets at the end will tell you which port you are using.
Updating Novus Alpha
Q. Everytime I go to update i am getting an error message telling me to "Check My Connect Cable"?
OR
Q. Everytime i plug the USB cable into the unit it starts up everytime and doesn't switch to the blank screen (Download Mode)
A. There has been a problem with the installation of the USB Driver and the computer is having trouble trying to syncranise with the unit.
To solve this just follow the steps below:
STEPS
- First of all you will need to Unplug the USB Cable from the Computer.
- Now you will need to remove the USB Driver from your system. This can be done by:
- Going to the Control Panel
- Add or Remove Programs
- Find the driver called - Silicon Laboratories CP210x USB to UART Bridge (Driver Removal) and click on "Change/Remove"
- Next a window will pop up. Just click on "Uninstall" and the driver will be removed
- Now restart the computer - Very Important!
- Once the computer has restarted, return here and install the Alpha Updater.
- When the installation has finished you must restart the computer - Very Important!
- Now nearly everything is installed, there is just one last section to be finished. You will need to now plug the USB Cable into the Computer AND Novus Alpha. You will need to wait untill Windows had popped up with a "Found New Hardware" message. Once this has finished and has disappeared you will need to Unplug the USB Cable from the Novus Alpha, then re-apply straight away.
- Now the unit will have a blank screen and will be ready for the update.
Please note, that the unit should always be blank for the update to work.
